U.S. TRANSCOM/AMC commander visits
by 2nd. Lt. Larry van der Oord
MacDill received a visit from the U.S. Transportation Command and Air Mobility Command commander Wednesday while he was en route to the 41st annual Tony Jannus Award Dinner in St. Petersburg.
Gen. John W. Handy visited with wing leadership before attending the annual event which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of scheduled commercial aviation.
The Tony Jannus Award is named in honor of the pilot who flew the first commercial airline flight, which traveled from St. Petersburg to Tampa in 1914. General Handy was present at the ceremony which honored this year's winner, the Honorable Norman Y. Mineta, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
While at MacDill, General Handy received an update on the status of the 6th Air Mobility Wing in a briefing from Brig. Gen. Tanker Snyder, 6th AMW commander.
General Handy also toured the base and took some time during his visit to "coin" Master Sgt. Wes Mathias, 6th Operations Support Squadron weather flight superintendent, and Tech. Sgt. Otis Pless, 6th OSS weather technician, for their outstanding efforts during the recent hurricanes.
Always on a tight schedule, General Handy left first thing Thursday morning to travel back to Scott AFB, Ill.
