Highly coveted, the Abilene Trophy will be returning to its former home here at MacDill.

There wasn't a champagne cork popped or streamers flying from the rafters, but the excitement in the air was electric. The greater Tampa Bay Area received the coveted Air Mobility Command Community Support Award during the Phoenix Rally conference April 23 amid rousing applause and camera strobes.

The support award, also known as the Abilene Trophy, is given in recognition of the long-established friendship and partnership between an AMC base and the surrounding communities which have shown outstanding support to a nearby AMC base.

This year MacDill and the local communities of Tampa, South Tampa, Brandon, St. Petersburg and Clearwater were awarded the trophy for the second time at the MacDill Davis Conference Center. The Tampa Bay Community was honored with the prestigious award previously in 2001.

"This is proof of the great relationship between the base and our surrounding communities. This is a friendship that has existed since MacDill was first activated and has grown stronger," said Brig. Gen. (Sel.) Tanker Snyder, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander. "That's why this recognition is so important, not only to MacDill, but also to everyone in the Bay Area. We could not do our mission successfully without the support of our friends and neighbors in the Bay Area."

The Military Affairs Committee of Abilene, Texas, and AMC established the award in January 1999 to recognize a civilian community for outstanding support to a nearby AMC installation between January and December of the preceding year.

The 6th Air Mobility Wing worked closely with the city of Tampa and local chambers of commerce to put together the award nomination that detailed the close relationship between MacDill and the Tampa community.
