The first ever all women's retreat was held Wednesday at Memorial park.

Nearly 50 of MacDill's service women gathered together at 4:30 p.m. to officially mark the end of the duty day. To recognize the unique contributions of women on MacDill and celebrate Women's history month, the MacDill's Women's History Month Committee organized an all women's retreat.

"We as female military members are the perfect example of the national theme for WHM; 'Women Pioneering the Future'," said Staff Sgt. Christy Long, one of the coordinators.

According to statistics reports from 2001, in the United States military approximately 200,000 women make up 14 percent of the active duty forces.88.2 percent of the military's 1.1 million jobs are open to women.

"The response for volunteers was very positive and attracted a diverse group of women from all over the base," said Long. "We had ranks ranging from airman to full bird colonel.

As a Senior Airman, Suzette Vergnetti, 6th Communication Squadron, was honored to stand proud among the all female flight. Commanding the flight was Col. Barb Jacobi, 6th Mission Support Group commander, the only female group commander. In addition to the flight of women, the honor guard provided an all female flag detail.
