A MacDill dependent playing with the Tampa Bay Juniors Volleyball Club helped her team secure a second-place standing at the USA Junior Olympics Girls Volleyball Championship earlier this month.

Adria Mullaney, 14, daughter of Staff Sgt. Stephen Mullaney of the 6th Security Forces Squadron and Mary Beth Mullaney, participated in the national tournament June 24 through July 2 in Atlanta.

The ages 14 and under division of the tournament consisted of 64 teams and eight flights. Mullaney's team played in the top "gold" bracket, which comprises of eight teams.

The team won its first match of the tournament edging out competition, the Alamo 14 team from Texas, 25-19, 25-18. It followed up with another victory against St. Louis, posting scores of 25-22, 25-22. In the finals, the team fell to the Sunset team from Nebraska 25-13, 25-16, earning second-place honors.

Mullaney, who has been playing with the Tampa Bay Juniors Volleyball Club for the past two years, is proud of her team's achievements in the tournament.

"It was a good feeling," she said. "We had confidence and knew we would win if we worked hard." Mullaney, who attends Bayshore Christian School, enjoys playing volleyball and interacting with her team.

"I have been playing with them for two years," she said. "Getting to know them and what they know about volleyball is really neat."

College volleyball is Mullaney's goal for the future. She would like to earn a volleyball and academic scholarship for the University of Southern California.

The Tampa Bay Juniors Volleyball Club holds tryouts each November for its six different age brackets and the season takes place from January through July each year.

Teams participate in tournaments every other weekend, as well as regionals and nationals if they qualify.
