Volunteers unite for the Great American Cleanup

Story by Jeff Sprinkmann
6th Civil Engineer Squadron

From 8:30 a.m. to noon, April 26, volunteers, young and old, are expected to give MacDill a spring-cleaning at the 5th semi-annual MacDill Beach Cleanup. Last year, the Beach Cleanup involved more than 100 Air Force members and their families. The group collected an estimated 200 bags of litter, along with boards, plywood and other large debris from MacDill's shoreline and beaches. In all, approximately 3,500 pounds of refuse was collected during the cleanup event.

Lt. Col. Tony Foti, 6th Civil Engineer Squadron commander said on April 26, MacDill will join America in one big 'Great American Cleanup.' The event is a nationwide effort where volunteers come together each year to improve their communities.

President George W. Bush will serve as the Honorary Chair of the Great American Cleanup for which more than 2,000 volunteers from Hillsborough County will contribute their services at more than 18 sites throughout the county including MacDill.

To kick off the event, MacDill volunteers should meet between 8:30 and 9 a.m. at Memorial Park, just south of the Bayshore gate.

For the third year in a row, Westshore Pizza will donate pizza for MacDill's Beach Cleanup. Event sponsors, Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful and Publix will contribute t-shirts and supply refreshments for the volunteers. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are also sponsoring the community event and are promoting it through the "Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful Night, at the Tropicana Field." The game is Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays starting at 7:15 p.m. Volunteers for the event will get specially discounted tickets at a two-for-one price of only $14. To volunteer, and receive your Great American Cleanup t-shirt, and to request a special order form for the ball game, call 828-0460 or email jeff.sprinkmann@macdill.af.mil.
