The holiday season is rapidly approaching and many of us eagerly anticipate a day filled with friends, family and good cheer centered on the traditional Thanksgiving Day feast. Unfortunately, not all of our military families at MacDill share this joy. There are hundreds of less fortunate military families that without the generous donations of fellow military members and local grocery chains would not be able to enjoy these holiday festivities.

The military community has a long-standing tradition of taking care of its own by providing needed aid, support and comfort. In keeping with this tradition the MacDill Company Grade Officers' Council annually sponsors the "Harvest Share" program. This program provides a Thanksgiving Day meal, which includes a 12- to 15-pound turkey with all the trimmings, to less fortunate military families in all branches of service assigned to MacDill.

Look for Harvest Share baskets at the base commissary, chapel, family camp/marina and various locations within each squadron where canned goods and non-perishable food items are collected. Although all items are greatly appreciated, traditional Thanksgiving Day staples such as stuffing, canned green beans, canned or mix gravies, instant potatoes, canned yams or sweet potatoes, canned corn and cranberry sauce are most needed. The CGOC will have the final collection and assembly Nov. 21. Volunteers will distribute the food baskets Nov. 24.
