Hangar Loop Drive scheduled for improvement

by Lt. Col. Anthony Foti
6th Civil Engineering Squadron commander

Construction plans for Hangar Loop Drive from Gull Place to the base gas station located south of Hangar 5 will be finalized this month.

The design improves the drainage collection system so the need to close this section of the base roadway network during summer storms, will be eliminated.

During construction most of the traffic will be diverted along Hillsborough Loop Drive and related parallel streets. For this purpose the one way section of Hillsborough Loop Drive will be re-marked for two way traffic. Hangar Loop Drive will be closed to through traffic. The construction will be phased in such a way that access to the buildings and hangars along the flight line will always be accessible.

The storm water outfall will cross Bayshore Drive near the security forces building. During this construction Bayshore Drive in the immediate construction area will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction. The installation of the culvert is expected to take about six weeks.

The construction is anticipated to start in January 2004 and expected to last through the end of the year. Following the completion of the construction Hangar Loop Drive and Hillsborough Loop Drive will be marked for two-way traffic. This will eliminate all of the one-way streets along the major MacDill roadway network.

Before and during construction, the 6th CES will provide dates and times that sections of streets will be closed.
