by Tech. Sgt. J.R. Foster

As many of us try to forget that annual day telling us we're getting another year older, MacDill proudly strides through the years. Wednesday, MacDill celebrated her 62nd Birthday.

Many dates surround the beginning of MacDill. Construction began on September 6, 1939, beneficial occupancy was assumed on March 11, 1940 and the base was formally dedicated on April 16 1941.

When construction began the base was initially named Southeast Air Base, Tampa. The base was renamed MacDill Field in honor of Colonel Leslie MacDill, when his BC-1 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Bolling Field in Washington D.C., on November 9, 1939.

Shortly after the United States Air Force was established in 1947, the base came to be known as MacDill Air Force Base.
