Academic scholarships totaling $20,000 were awarded to 21 students at MacDill June 2. The reception, hosted by the Officers' Spouses' Club in association with the Enlisted Wives' Club was held at the home of Army Gen. and Mrs. Doug Brown.

The two clubs work throughout the year to raise funds to enrich the lives of military families. Through many small acts of service such as volunteering to work at the thrift shop and material donations, these clubs are able to pool resources culminating in $20,000 for scholarships.

Col. Margaret Woodward, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander, was on hand for the celebration of academic excellence and assisted Nancy Taylor, OSC/EWC chairperson, in awarding certificates to the students.

Each student completed an essay to include their goals and future aspirations. The essays were considered along with their community involvement, grade point average, test scores, resumes and recommendation letter. Recipients were judged by a panel of educators and the scholarship committee.

The scholarships are awarded each year to students who are dependants of active duty, retired or deceased military members in the five-county, metro Tampa area.
