Main channel at Base Marina to be dredged
To better serve our customers, the 6th Services Squadron announces dredging of the main channel and basin at Coon's Creek FamCamp and Marina. The project will begin the second week of May (as early as the 9th) and will take approximately three weeks.
During the time of the dredging, the Marina facility will be closed and sales of bait, sundries, propane and rental of power boats will be suspended until the project is completed. The public boat ramps will also be closed due to safety reasons.
The contractor has stated it will be extremely difficult and potentially hazardous for boats to attempt to maneuver around the dredge to open water south of MacDill. Once this project has begun, the only boats authorized to launch from MacDill will be the 6th Security Forces Squadron patrol boats.
The Marina Activities Room will remain open and available for rent, as will reservations of the beach pavilions. In addition, customers may rent kayaks and canoes from Bldg. 60 so long as they launch from another site. Additional equipment rentals will not be affected by this project and will continue with business as usual.
6th Services Squadron customers who frequent Coon's Creek Marina are encouraged to use other available launching sites for their private boats, including Ballast Point boat ramp and the Gandy Bridge boat ramp.
The dredging project will alleviate the shallow and nearly impassable sections of the channel boaters have experienced for years. Once completed, accessibility for boaters will be greatly improved including dock repair/replacement in the basin next to the Marina.
Signage will be posted and the ramp will be available as soon as the dredging project is completed. For further information concerning this project, call Outdoor Recreation at 828-4982. (Courtesy of 6th Services Squadron)
