6 MDSS Airman wins Chamber of Commerce award

by Lt. Col. Joseph Burger
6th Medical Support Squadron commander

Local community leaders recognized a member of the 6th Air Mobility Wing as the "Health Care Support Service Worker of the Year" at a banquet Sept. 27.

Tech. Sgt. Shanelle Malnar took home one of ten Health Care Spotlight Awards sponsored by the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes "unsung" medical heroes of the South Tampa Area. Sergeant Malnar, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Medical Resource Management Flight of the 6th Medical Support Squadron, arrived at MacDill in November of 2004 and immediately began revamping several deficient financial programs within the 6th Medical Group.

Her efforts have dramatically improved financial operations and set the stage for a successful medical inspection by the Inspector General and a civilian healthcare accrediting agency early in 2006. Her active mentoring of younger troops within the flight resulted in significant morale improvements.

Additionally, the consummate patient advocate, her direct involvement with a distraught patient who was about to undergo a very traumatic procedure ensured the patient and family were well taken care of and helped them cope with the situation.
