Victory over Japan Day is celebrated on Aug. 15, commemorating Japan's unconditional surrender to the Allies on Aug. 14, 1945, which brought an end to fighting in the Pacific.

In addition to it being the day that World War II ended, it is also remembered by the unforgettable Life Magazine photograph taken in New York's Times Square.

Alfred Eisenstadt, a Life Magazine photographer, took the famous photograph of a sailor sweeping a nurse into his arms for a celebratory kiss.

The Times Square Alliance, on the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, invited couples from all generations and of all types to celebrate again in Times Square Sunday. The event was to honor the United States Armed Forces and to celebrate the universal ideals of peace, love and hope.
