Benefits Delivery at Discharge

by Dick Ulrich
6th Medical Group

Under an agreement between the Department of Veterans Affair's and the Department of Defense, active duty personnel are now able to file a claim for service-connected disability compensation while on active duty.

Prior to their separation, service members will have their medical records reviewed for claimable service-connected disabilities, receive a VA medical evaluation relating to disabilities claimed, have their claim adjudicated by the VA and be notified of the results of their claimed disability(ies) shortly after separation from active duty upon VA receipt of the service members DD-214.

Service members wishing to participate in the program must be within 60 to 180 days of discharge or retirement from the date of claim filing, and be available for a medical evaluation by the VA. If separating or retiring after Aug. 31, you will need to have a copy of your medical records made for the VA to enable participation in this program.

For further information, call 827-9618/9, or visit the program staff at the Base Hospital, located on the 2nd floor, room C-278, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
